عنْ أَبي هُرَيْرةَ، رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ صُفُوفِ الرِّجَالِ أَوَّلُهَا، وَشَرُّها آخِرُهَا، وَخَيْرُ صُفُوفِ النِّسَاءِ آخِرُهَا، وَشَرُّهَا أَوَّلُهَا» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of the men's rows is the first of them, and the worst is the last of them; and the best of the women's rows is the last of them, and the worst is the first of them." Reported by Muslim.

أنّ أول صفوف الرجال أفضل من آخرها، لقربها من الإمام، وبعدها عن النساء المؤدي إلى عدم الاطلاع عليهن والافتتان بهنّ. أنّ آخر صفوف النساء أفضل من أولها، لبعدهن عن الرجال الذي قد يؤدي إلى الفتنة. الخير والشر المراد بهما هنا كثرة الثواب وقلته لا حصول الإثم.
The first of the men's rows is better than the last because of its nearness to the imam and its distance from the women, which prevents seeing them and being tempted by them. The last of the women's rows is better than the first because of their distance from the men, which might otherwise lead to temptation. What is meant by "best" and "worst" here is the abundance or scarcity of reward, not the incurring of sin.
