عنْ أَبي مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: كانَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ مَناكِبَنَا في الصَّلاةِ، ويقُولُ: «اسْتَوُوا ولا تَخْتَلِفُوا فتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ، لِيَلِنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُوا الأَحْلامِ والنُّهَى، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe our shoulders in the prayer and say: "Stand straight and do not differ, lest your hearts differ. Let those of you who are mature and discerning stand next to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
يمسح مناكبنا: يسويها بيده الكريمة حتى لا يخرج بعض الصف عن بعض. لا تختلفوا: لا يتقدم منكب بعضكم على منكب بعض. فتختلف قلوبكم: أي تختلف إرادتها وأهواؤها. ليلني: ليدنُ مني. أولو الأحلام: أصحاب الحلم والتثبت. والنهى: العقل.
"He wipes our shoulders": he aligns them with his noble hand so that no part of the row protrudes beyond another. "Do not differ": let not the shoulder of one of you go ahead of the shoulder of another. "Lest your hearts differ": that is, lest their wills and desires diverge. "Let them stand next to me": let them be close to me. "Those of maturity": people of forbearance and steadiness. "And discernment": intellect and reason.

استحباب أمر الإمام المصلين أن يسووا صفوفهم، ويباشر تسويتها بنفسه إذا لم يفعلوا هم بأنفسهم ذلك. يستحب أن يلي الإمام في الصف الأول أعلم الناس وأعقلهم وأحلمهم، ثم عوام الناس ثم الصبيان ثم النساء.
The recommendation that the imam command the worshippers to straighten their rows, and that he undertake straightening them himself if they do not do so on their own. It is recommended that those standing next to the imam in the first row be the most knowledgeable, most sensible, and most forbearing of people, then the common people, then the boys, then the women.
