Riyad Al Salihin

Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Between every two calls there is a prayer; between every two calls there is a prayer; between every two calls there is a prayer" — and he said the third time: "for whoever wishes." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"The two calls" (al-adhanayn): what is meant by "the two calls" is the adhan and the iqamah.

It is recommended to pray two rak'ahs between the adhan and the iqamah. His saying "for whoever wishes" makes clear that it is not obligatory, lest anyone understand from the repetition of the command that it is compulsory.
