عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِيمَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلاةِ الْعِشَاءِ إلى الفَجْرِ إحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً، يُسَلِّمُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ رَكْعَتيْنِ، ويُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ، فَإذَا سَكَتَ المُؤَذِّنُ مِنْ صَلاةِ الْفَجْرِ، وَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْفَجْرُ، وَجاءَهُ المُؤَذِّنُ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الأَيْمَنِ، حَتَّى يأْتِيَهُ المُؤَذِّنُ لِلإِقَامَةِ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ. قَوْلُهَا: «يُسَلِّمُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ» هَكذَا هُوَ في (مُسْلِمٍ)، وَمَعْنَاهُ: بعْدَ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray, between the time he finished the Isha prayer and dawn, eleven rak'ahs, making the taslim between every two rak'ahs and making witr with one. When the muezzin fell silent after the call for the dawn prayer, and the dawn had become clear to him, and the muezzin came to him, he would rise and pray two light rak'ahs, then lie down on his right side until the muezzin came to him for the iqamah. Reported by Muslim. Her saying "making the taslim between every two rak'ahs" — thus it is in (Muslim), and its meaning is: after every two rak'ahs.

تبين له الفجر: أي ظهر له الفجر الصادق، واحترز به عن الأذان الأول للفجر.
"The dawn had become clear to him" (tabayyana lahu al-fajr): that is, the true dawn appeared to him — by which she excluded the first call for Fajr.
