عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: الوِتْرُ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ كَصَلاةِ المَكْتُوبَةِ، ولكِنْ سَنَّ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «إنَّ اللّهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوِتْرَ، فأَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ». رَوَاهُ أبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Witr is not obligatory like the compulsory prayer, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made it a sunnah and said: "Indeed Allah is Witr (One) and loves the odd; so pray Witr, O people of the Qur'an." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
ليس بحتم: أي ليس بفرض، بل هو سنة مؤكدة. إن الله وتر: أي واحد ذاتًا وصفاتٍ وأفعالًا. يحب الوتر: أي يحب العدد الفردي الموافق لصفته، ولذلك كانت مرات الطواف والسعي ورمي الجمار، وعدد التسبيحات في الصلاة، وصلاة الوتر فردية لا زوجية. فأوتروا يا أهل القرآن: أهل القرآن هم القراء والحفاظ، وتخصيصهم يدل على أنًهم أولى الناس بالحرص على صلاة الوتر لما معهم من نعمة القرآن.
"Not obligatory": that is, it is not a compulsory duty, but rather an emphasized sunnah. "Indeed Allah is Witr": that is, One in His essence, attributes, and actions. "Loves the odd": that is, He loves the odd number that accords with His attribute, and for that reason the circuits of Tawaf and Sa'i, the stoning of the pillars, the number of glorifications in the prayer, and the Witr prayer are odd and not even. "So pray Witr, O people of the Qur'an": the people of the Qur'an are the reciters and those who have memorized it, and singling them out indicates that they are the most deserving of people to be keen on the Witr prayer, on account of the blessing of the Qur'an that they possess.
