Riyad Al Salihin

Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Mecca heading for Medina, and when we were near Azwara he dismounted, then raised his hands and supplicated Allah for a while, then fell down in prostration and remained a long time. Then he stood up and raised his hands for a while, then fell down in prostration [again]; he did this three times. He said: "I asked my Lord and interceded for my nation, and He granted me a third of my nation, so I fell down in prostration out of gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my nation, and He granted me a third of my nation, so I fell down in prostration to my Lord out of gratitude. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my nation, and He granted me the remaining third, so I fell down in prostration to my Lord." Reported by Abu Dawud.

The legitimacy and recommendation of the prostration of gratitude upon the attainment of a blessing for oneself or another, and likewise upon the warding off of an affliction from oneself or another. It is a single prostration, like the prostration of recitation, and it is recommended to prolong it and to repeat it each time a blessing is renewed or an affliction is repeatedly averted; it is also recommended to stand for supplication after completing the prostration and to raise the hands toward the sky during the supplication. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) concern for his nation and the extent of his compassion toward them, and the abundant grace of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) upon him and upon them.
