Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever spends a pair of anything in the cause of Allah will be called from the gates of Paradise: 'O servant of Allah, this is good!' So whoever is among the people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer; whoever is among the people of jihad will be called from the gate of jihad; whoever is among the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyan; and whoever is among the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! There is no distress upon anyone called from those gates. But will anyone be called from all of those gates?" He said: "Yes, and I hope that you will be among them." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"a pair (zawjayn)": in some chains of the hadith: "And what is a pair?" He said: "Two horses, two calves, or two camels." "in the cause of Allah": this hadith may be general, covering all acts of righteousness—two prayers, fasting two days, or following one charity with another—or it may be specific to jihad in the cause of Allah; the general meaning is more fitting, given what the rest of the hadith's wording indicates. "a pair (zawjayn)": the sum of two individuals of the same kind, such as two horses or two charities; the word "zawj" also conveys the meaning of a like and a counterpart. "al-Rayyan": derived from "al-rayy" (the quenching of thirst), the opposite of being thirsty; it also serves as a proper name, meaning: the one whose thirst is quenched. "and I hope that you will be among them": that is, I earnestly hope. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said "I hope" out of courtesy toward Allah the Exalted.

An account of the merit of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), that acts of righteousness are combined in him, so that he is called from all the gates of Paradise as an honor to him. The permissibility of praising a person to his face, if there is no fear of it inducing vanity in him. The fasting people will be called on the Day of Resurrection from the gate of al-Rayyan, as an honor to them. A servant may be called to enter from all the gates if he has fulfilled their due and is among the people of all of them, by persistently seeking to increase in every kind of righteousness and obedience. His words "any distress" mean any deficiency or loss for one called to enter from all the gates such that he might miss some of them, since it is impossible to enter through all of them at once. The upshot, as is established, is that he is given the choice to enter through whichever gate he wishes, for the ultimate aim he attains is entering Paradise.
