عَنْ أَبي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا في سَبِيلِ اللّهِ إِلّا بَاعَدَ اللّهُ بِذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَجْهَهُ عَنِ النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no servant who fasts a day in the cause of Allah but that Allah, by that day, distances his face from the Fire by [a journey of] seventy autumns." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

ما من عبد: أي مكلف ويشمل الرجل والمرأة والحر والعبد لأنّ الجميع عبيد اللّه تعالى. سبعين خريفًا: أي مسافة سير الإنسان سبعين سنة. في سبيل اللّهِ: أي في مرضاة اللّهِ، فيصوم قاصدًا بذلك وجهَ اللّهِ تعالى
"There is no servant": that is, no accountable person; this includes man and woman, free and slave, for all are servants of Allah the Exalted. "seventy autumns": that is, the distance a person would travel in seventy years. "in the cause of Allah": that is, seeking Allah's good pleasure, so that he fasts intending thereby the Face of Allah the Exalted.

بيان فضل الصوم ولو كان يومًا واحدًا، وأنّه يكون وقاية لصاحبه من النار. عظيم رحمة اللّهِ بنا حيث جعل للصيام هذا الأجر في الإبعاد عن النار. الحثّ على صيام التطوع ولو يومًا واحدًا، لأنّ رمضان فريضة والناس فيه سواء، كما أنّه لا يشار إلى رمضان بصيام يوم واحد.
An account of the merit of fasting, even a single day, and that it serves as a protection from the Fire for the one who observes it. The immensity of Allah's mercy toward us, in that He appointed for fasting this reward of distancing from the Fire. Encouragement to observe voluntary fasting, even for a single day—for Ramadan is an obligation in which people are equal, and a single day's fast does not refer to Ramadan.
