Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward will have his past sins forgiven." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

An account of the reward of fasting done sincerely for Allah the Exalted, and that it is a cause for the forgiveness of minor sins—and major ones too, if Allah wills, when accompanied by sincere repentance—except for what pertains to the rights of others, in which case the restoration of those rights is required. The hadith distinguishes between one who fasts out of habit—that is, without presence of heart or mindful intention—and one who fasts as an act of worship, present of heart and seeking reward from Allah the Exalted.
