عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللّهِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى الْهِلالَ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأَمْنِ وَالْإيمَانِ، وَالسَّلامَةِ وَالْإسْلامِ، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللّهُ، هِلالُ رُشْدٍ وخَيْرٍ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Talha ibn Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he saw the crescent, would say: "O Allah, bring it upon us with security and faith, with safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah. A crescent of guidance and goodness." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
أهلّه: اجعله يهل ويشرق بالأمن الدائم والإيمان الثابت. هلال رشد: الرشد ضد الغي. ومعناه الهدى والصلاح ويقابله الضلال والفساد.
"bring it upon us (ahillahu)": make it appear and rise with lasting security and firm faith. "a crescent of guidance (rushd)": rushd is the opposite of error; its meaning is guidance and righteousness, and it is opposed by misguidance and corruption.

It is from the Sunnah that the Muslim, upon seeing the crescent, supplicates with the invocations reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
