Abu al-Yaqzan Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever fasts on the day about which there is doubt has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him). Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.
"about which there is doubt": that is, people are uncertain about it—whether it is part of Sha'ban or part of Ramadan.
The prohibition of fasting the day of doubt in Sha'ban, except for one who has a customary practice, such as one who fasts Mondays and Thursdays. What is intended by the prohibition is the concern that a person might take precaution for the arrival of Ramadan, saying, "I will fast a day or two beforehand as a precaution"—for such precaution has no basis. This is why he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast upon sighting it, and break your fast upon sighting it," that is, upon sighting the crescent.
