عَنْ لَقِيطِ ابْنِ صَبِرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ؟ قَالَ: «أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ، وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ الْأَصَابِعِ، وَبَالِغْ فِي الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ إلَّا أنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Laqit ibn Sabirah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution (wudu)." He said: "Perform the ablution thoroughly, run [water] between the fingers, and be thorough in sniffing water [into the nose], unless you are fasting." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

أسبغ الوضوء: أتمَّه بغسل ما زاد في حدود المفروض في الوجه واليدين والرجلين. وخلل الأصابع: ويحصل التخليل بالتشبيك مبالغة في إيصال الماء وتحقيق النظافة. وبالغ في الاستنشاق: أي المضمضة مع الاستنشاق ويكون بإيصال الماء إلى الخيشوم وجذبه بالنفس في الاستنشاق والغرغرة في المضمضة.
"Perform the ablution thoroughly (asbigh)": complete it by washing somewhat beyond the obligatory limits of the face, the hands, and the feet. "Run [water] between the fingers (khallil)": this is achieved by interlacing them, striving to make the water reach [everywhere] and to attain cleanliness. "Be thorough in sniffing water (istinshaq)": that is, rinsing the mouth together with sniffing water into the nose; it is done by making the water reach the upper part of the nostrils and drawing it in with the breath when sniffing, and gargling when rinsing the mouth.

Being thorough in rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose is a sunnah for one who is not fasting; it is disliked for the fasting person to be thorough in rinsing the mouth and sniffing water for fear that the water may reach his stomach and thereby break his fast.
