Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "When one of you forgetfully eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it was only Allah who fed him and gave him drink." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

If the fasting person eats or drinks forgetfully, his fast is not invalidated, whether it is an obligatory fast in Ramadan, a voluntary fast, or a make-up fast. He owes neither a make-up fast nor expiation, and this includes everything similar that enters the body cavity by way of the mouth, the nose, or a vein, with no difference between a small or a large amount of it. The tolerance of Islam and its consideration of human nature in not holding one accountable for forgetfulness and error and what results from them, on the condition that there is no negligence or laxity in that.
