Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year." Reported by Muslim.

Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal is as though he fasted the whole year, because each day counts as ten: "Whoever comes with a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof" [Surah al-An'am: 160]. So Ramadan equals ten months, and the six days, each counting as ten, equal two months. The best way to fast the six days is to do them consecutively and immediately following the day of Eid, though there is no harm in fasting them separately. In his saying (peace and blessings be upon him), "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal," there is an indication that whoever still owes make-up days from Ramadan must complete them first, so as to fulfill the fast of Ramadan in full, and then fast six days of Shawwal. This is preferable, because making up what was missed of the obligatory fast takes precedence over voluntary fasting.
