عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابِلٍ لأَصُومَنَّ التَّاسِعَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I remain until next year, I shall certainly fast the ninth." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
إلى قابل: أي عام قابل، وفي رواية: "فإذا كان العام المقبل". لأصومنّ التاسع: وهو اليوم التاسع من شهر المحرّم.
"Until next [year] (qabil)": that is, the coming year; in one narration: "When the coming year arrives." "I shall certainly fast the ninth": which is the ninth day of the month of Muharram.

استحباب صيام يوم التاسع والعاشر من شهر المحرّم، الحكمة من ضم التاسع هي مخالفة اليهود الذين يفردون اليوم العاشر بالصيام. قال بعض أهل العلم أنّ المخالفة تحصل بصيام يوم قبله أو بعده، وضعّف غيرهم هذا القول لاعتماده على حديث ضعيف. والأولى صيام التاسع عملا بهذا الحديث الصحيح.
It is recommended to fast the ninth and tenth days of the month of Muharram. The wisdom behind adding the ninth is to differ from the Jews, who single out the tenth day alone for fasting. Some scholars said that the differing is achieved by fasting a day before it or after it; others weakened this view because it relies on a weak hadith. The preferable [course] is to fast the ninth, in accordance with this authentic hadith.
