عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعتَكِفُ العَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) during the last ten days of Ramadan. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

يعتكف: الاعتكاف هو لزوم الشيء وحبس النفس عليه، والمراد هنا لزوم المسجد والمكث فيه بنيَّة التفرغ لعبادة اللّه.
"Observe i'tikaf": i'tikaf is to keep to something and confine oneself to it; what is meant here is to keep to the mosque and remain in it with the intention of devoting oneself to the worship of Allah.

الاعتكاف من العبادات المشروعة المستحبة، وهو عبادة معروفة في الشرائع السابقة، ويدل على ذلك قوله تبارك وتعالى: وَعَهِدْنَا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ أَنْ طَهِّرَا بَيْتِيَ لِلطَّائِفِينَ وَالْعَاكِفِينَ وَالرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ [البقرة: ١٢٥]. حرص النّبيّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ على الاعتكاف في العشر الأواخر من رمضان دليل على زيادة فضله فيها لعِظَم شأنها. جواز الاعتكاف في أي وقت ثابت، وتخصيص هذه العشر هو للجمع بين فضل العبادة وفضيلة الزمان وبيان عظم أجره.
I'tikaf is one of the legislated, recommended acts of worship, and it is a form of worship known in the earlier revealed laws, as indicated by the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He): "And We charged Ibrahim and Isma'il: Purify My House for those who circumambulate, those who devote themselves to it in retreat, and those who bow and prostrate" [Surah al-Baqarah: 125]. The keenness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan is evidence of its increased merit therein, on account of their great significance. I'tikaf is established as permissible at any time, and the singling out of these ten days is to combine the merit of the worship with the merit of the time and to show the greatness of its reward.
