Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever performs Hajj and does not engage in obscene talk or intimacy, nor commits any sin or wrongdoing, returns [free of sin] as on the day his mother bore him." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"and does not engage in obscene talk or intimacy": rafath in this hadith includes both foul speech and sexual intercourse. "nor commits any sin": one who strives against his soul so that no evil deed, act of disobedience, quarrel, or ill conduct issues from it.

Hajj expiates sins, both minor and major, and wipes away the offenses committed before it—this together with repentance from major sins and the restoration of people's rights to those entitled to them. The mentioned expiation of sins is conditional upon the Hajj being accepted (mabrur): one in which sincerity and correctness are realized, in which the servant strives to fulfill its conditions and pillars, which is crowned with a firm resolve to repent and to restore people's rights, and which remains free of offenses, acts of disobedience, and evil deeds.
