عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ: يا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، نَرَى الْجِهَادَ أفْضَلَ العَمَلِ، أَفَلا نُجَاهِدُ؟ فَقَالَ: «لَكُنَّ أفْضَلُ الْجِهَادِ حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we regard jihad as the best of deeds; shall we not go out to fight?" He said: "But the best jihad [for you women] is an accepted (mabrur) Hajj." Reported by al-Bukhari.

الحجّ للنساء أفضل من الجهاد ما لم يتعيّن بأمر الإسلام أو دخول العدو إلى البلد وتمكنهنَّ من القتال وعدم الخوف عليهن. التعبير عن الحجّ بالجهاد إشارة إلى عظيم فضله وثوابه وحضّ النساء عليه.
For women, Hajj is superior to jihad, so long as jihad has not become individually obligatory—whether by the command of Islam or by the enemy's entry into the land—provided they are able to fight and there is no fear for their safety. Describing Hajj as jihad is an indication of its immense merit and reward, and an encouragement for women to perform it.
