عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «عُمْرَةٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ تَعدِلُ حَجَّةً، أَوْ حَجَّةً مَعِي» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An Umrah in Ramadan is equal to a Hajj," or "to a Hajj with me." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

تعدل حجّة: تقوم مقامها في الثواب لا أنّها تعدلها في كل شيء فإنّه لو كان عليه حجّة فاعتمر في رمضان لا تجزئه عن الحجّة.
"is equal to a Hajj": it takes its place in reward, not that it equals it in every respect; for if one owed an obligatory Hajj and performed Umrah in Ramadan, it would not discharge his obligation of Hajj.
