Laqit ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father is a very old man who is unable to perform Hajj, or Umrah, or to travel." He said: "Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

The permissibility of performing Hajj and Umrah on behalf of another who is incapable due to an illness from which recovery is not hoped for, or due to old age; but it is a condition that whoever performs Hajj on behalf of another must have already performed Hajj for himself. Allah the Exalted has lifted hardship from the Muslim community and made its religious obligations easy for it.
