Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which deed is most beloved to Allah the Exalted?" He said: "Prayer at its proper time." I said, "Then which?" He said: "Dutifulness to parents." I said, "Then which?" He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

A statement that jihad in the path of Allah is among the deeds most beloved to Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) singled out prayer, dutifulness to parents, and jihad for mention because they are a mark of all other acts of obedience; for example, whoever neglects the obligatory prayer until its time passes without excuse—despite how light its burden and how great its merit—will be even more neglectful of everything else. There is no contradiction between this hadith and the preceding one regarding whether jihad is mentioned first or later. In the previous hadith the question was about the best of deeds—that is, the highest in reward and loftiest in rank—so jihad was placed first; and in this hadith the question was about the deeds most beloved to Allah, so prayer at its time and dutifulness to parents were placed first.
