عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «الْإِيمَانُ بِاللهِ، وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِهِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are best?" He said: "Faith in Allah, and jihad in His path." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

أنَّ خيرَ الأعمالِ صحَّةُ الإيمانِ باللّهِ ويدخل فيه ضمنًا الإيمان برسوله صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ. الإيمان يمثل الجانب القلبي، والجهاد يمثل الجانب العملي، ولا يكون إيمان بلا عمل. تخصيص الجهاد بالإضافة إلى الإيمان فيه بيان لأهميته وفضله وعظم أجره على سائر الأعمال لما فيه من بذل للنفس والمال في سبيل إعلاء كلمة اللّه، ورغبة عن متاع الدنيا طمعًا فيما عند اللّه في الآخرة.
The best of deeds is soundness of faith in Allah, which implicitly includes faith in His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Faith represents the inward dimension of the heart, and jihad represents the dimension of action; and there is no [complete] faith without action. Singling out jihad alongside faith is a statement of its importance, its merit, and the greatness of its reward over all other deeds, because it involves sacrificing one's self and one's wealth for the sake of raising high the word of Allah, and turning away from the enjoyment of this world in longing for what is with Allah in the Hereafter.
