عَنْ أَبي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ بِحَضْرَةِ الْعَدُوِّ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ أَبْوَابَ الجَنَّةِ تَحْتَ ظِلالِ السُّيُوفِ» فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ رَثُّ الْهَيْئَةِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا مُوسَى، أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ: أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلامَ ثُمَّ كَسَرَ جَفْنَ سَيْفِهِ فَألْقَاهُ، ثُمَّ مَشَى بِسَيْفِهِ إِلَى الْعَدُوِّ، فَضَرَبَ بِهِ حَتَّى قُتِلَ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa al-Ashʿari reported: I heard my father (may Allah be pleased with him), while facing the enemy, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords." At this a man of shabby appearance stood up and said, "O Abu Musa, did you [yourself] hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say this?" He said, "Yes." So [the man] returned to his companions and said, "I bid you peace [farewell]." Then he broke the scabbard of his sword and threw it away, and walked with his sword toward the enemy and fought with it until he was killed. Reported by Muslim.

أبواب الجنّة تحت ظلال السيوف: عَبَّرَ عنها بالظِّلالِ كِنايةً على أنَّها مُشهَرَةٌ وليستْ في غِمدِها، ولا يَحصُلُ ذلك إلَّا بالقُربِ والدُّنوِّ منَ العَدوِّ جفن سيفه: غلافه وغمده.
"The gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords": he expressed it with "shadows" as a figure indicating that the swords are drawn and not in their scabbards, and this comes about only by drawing near and closing in on the enemy. "The scabbard of his sword (jafn)": its sheath and case.
