عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ إِلَى بَنِي لَحْيَانَ فَقَالَ: «لِيَنْبَعِثْ مِنْ كُلِّ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا، وَالْأَجْرُ بَيْنَهُمَا» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «لِيَخْرُجْ مِنْ كُلِّ رَجُلَيْنِ رَجُلٌ» ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْقَاعِدِ: «أَيُّكُمْ خَلَفَ الْخَارِجَ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَمَالِهِ بِخَيْرٍ كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ نِصْفِ أَجْرِ الْخَارِجِ».
Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent [an expedition] to Banu Lahyan and said: "Let one man of every two set out, and the reward is [shared] between them both." Reported by Muslim. In another narration: "Let one man of every two go out." Then he said to the one who stayed behind: "Whichever of you looks after the one who goes out, [caring for] his family and property with goodness, will have half the reward of the one who goes out."

نِصفِ أَجْرِ الخارجِ: يَعنِي أَنَّهما شَريكانِ في الأَجرِ.
"Half the reward of the one who goes out (nisf ajr al-kharij)": meaning that the two are partners in the reward.

أنّه إذا لم يكن هناك حاجة للنفير العام كان من الواجب أن ينفر بعض المسلمين للجهاد، ويقيم في الأوطان بعضهم للإنتاج وتقديم ما يحتاج إليه الوطن من السلاح وغيره ورعاية أسر المجاهدين والأجر بينهم سواء. تكامل الأدوار بين المجاهدين والقاعدين ولا يكتمل الجهاد إلا بذلك. حسن تدبير النّبيّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ لأمور المجاهدين في سبيل الله.
When there is no need for a general mobilization, it is obligatory that some Muslims march out to fight while others remain in the homeland to produce and provide what the homeland needs of weaponry and the like, and to care for the families of the fighters — and the reward between them is equal. The complementarity of roles between those who fight and those who stay behind; jihad is not complete without it. The excellence of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) management of the affairs of the fighters in the path of Allah.
