عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «يُغْفَرُ لِلشَّهِيدِ كُلُّ ذَنْبٍ إلَّا الدَّيْنَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ لَهُ: «الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ يُكَفِّرُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ إلَّا الدَّيْنَ»
Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The martyr is forgiven every sin except debt." Reported by Muslim. In another narration of his: "Being killed in the path of Allah expiates everything except debt."
الشرح · explanation
إلّا الدَّين: أي أنَّ دَيْنَ الآدَمِيِّ لا بُدَّ مِن إيفائِه في الدُّنيا وإلَّا حُمِل في الآخِرَةِ، لذلك لا يَنبغِي للإنسانِ أنْ يَتساهَلَ في أمرِ الدَّيْنِ.
"Except debt (illa al-dayn)": that is, a debt owed to a fellow human must be repaid in this world; otherwise it will be carried [as a burden] into the Hereafter. For this reason a person should not be lax in the matter of debt.

أنّ القتل في سبيل اللّهِ تعالى يكفّر الذنوب إلّا الدَّين، ولكن بشروط: الصبر والاحتساب والإقبال على الجهاد وترك الفرار. حقوق اللّهِ مبنية على المسامحة وحقوق العباد مبنية على المشاححة. أنّ الشهادة رغم فضلها وعِظَم أجرها لا تُسقط حقوق الناس بل لا بد من أدائها إلَّا أن يُعجَز عن ذلك.
That being killed in the path of Allah the Exalted expiates sins except debt — but subject to conditions: patience, seeking [Allah's] reward, advancing into battle, and not fleeing. The rights of Allah are built upon leniency, while the rights of [His] servants are built upon strict exaction. That martyrdom, despite its merit and the greatness of its reward, does not cancel the rights of people; rather they must be discharged, unless one is [genuinely] unable to do so.
