عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ جَعَلَ اللّهُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ النَّارِ خَنْدَقًا كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts a day in the path of Allah, Allah places between him and the Fire a trench like [the distance] between the heaven and the earth." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

خندقًا: الخَنْدَق: أُخدودٌ عميقٌ مستطيلٌ، يُحفر في ميدان القتال، ليَتَّقي به الجنود، والمراد: يكونُ له حجاب من النار عُمْق ما بين السَّماءِ والأرضِ.
"a trench" (khandaqan): the khandaq is a deep, elongated ditch dug in the field of battle so that the soldiers may shelter behind it; and what is meant is that he will have a barrier from the Fire of a depth like that which lies between the heaven and the earth.

من حبس نفسه يومًا مجاهدًا في سبيل اللّهِ تعالى جعل اللّهُ بينه وبين النار حاجزًا. أنّ الخندق كناية عن البعد عن النار.
Whoever confines himself for a day, striving in the path of Allah the Exalted, Allah places between him and the Fire a barrier. The trench is a metaphor for remoteness from the Fire.
