عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ، وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنَ نِفَاقٍ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies without having fought, and without having spoken to himself of fighting, dies upon a branch of hypocrisy." Reported by Muslim.

لم يغز: لم يباشر القتال في سبيل اللّهِ. لم يحدث نفسه: لم ينو الغزو. شعبة: خصلة.
"without having fought" (lam yaghzu): did not engage in combat in the path of Allah. "having spoken to himself" (lam yuhaddith nafsahu): did not intend to fight. "a branch" (shu'bah): a trait.

أنّ من لم يغز ولم يحدث نفسه به فقد أشبه المنافقين في تخلفهم عن الجهاد. أنّ من لم يتمكن من عمل الخير ينبغي له العزم وعقد النيّة على فعله، إذا ما أتيح له وتمكن منه فيكون له أجر نيته بدلًا من فعله، أمّا إذا لم يتمكن من الفعل ظاهرًا ولم يعزم عليه باطنًا فذلك تشبه بالمنافقين الذين لا يعملون الخير ولا ينوونه، خصوصًا الجهاد الذي أعزّ اللّه به الإسلام وأظهره على الدين كله.
That whoever neither fought nor spoke to himself of it has resembled the hypocrites in their staying back from jihad. That whoever is unable to perform a good deed ought to resolve upon it and form the intention to do it, so that if it becomes available to him and he is able, he attains the reward of his intention in place of the deed. But as for one who is unable to perform the deed outwardly and did not resolve upon it inwardly, that is a resemblance to the hypocrites, who neither do good nor intend it—especially jihad, by which Allah honored Islam and made it prevail over all religion.
