عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ أيُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «الْإِيمَانُ بِاللّهِ، وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبيلِهِ» قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَيُّ الرِّقَابِ أفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «أنْفَسُهَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِهَا، وَأَكْثَرُهَا ثَمَنًا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are best?" He said: "Faith in Allah and jihad in His way." I said: "Which slaves are best to free?" He said: "Those most precious to their owners and highest in price." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
أي الرقاب أفضل: أي أكثرها ثواباً عند عتقها. أنفَسها: أحسنها وأجودُها وأرغبُها عند أهلِها. عند أهلها: مالكيها.
"Which slaves are best": that is, which yield the most reward when freed. "Most precious": the finest, best, and most desired by their owners. "To their owners": their masters.

الحثّ على العتق، وكلما كان المملوك أكثر نفعًا لمالكيه وأكثر ثمنًا كان عتقه أفضل وأكثر ثوابًا. أنّ الإيمان أساس الأعمال الصالحة، وأنّ أفضل الأعمال مع الإيمان الجهاد لإعلاء كلمة اللّه عزّ وجلّ. يستحب التبرع بأحبّ المال إلى صاحبه تقربًا إلى اللّهِ بالأفضل والأجود. خيرُ الأعمالِ صدقُ الإيمانِ باللّه وصحةُ الاتباع لرسوله. أنّ أجرَ الفعلِ يتعلَّقُ بنَفعِه، وكلما عمَّ النفع عَظُمَ الأجر بفضل من الله.
Encouragement to free slaves; the more beneficial the slave is to his owners and the higher his price, the more meritorious and rewarding is his emancipation. Faith is the foundation of righteous deeds, and the best of deeds together with faith is jihad to raise high the word of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). It is recommended to give in charity the wealth most beloved to its owner, drawing near to Allah with the best and finest. The best of deeds is truthful faith in Allah and sound following of His Messenger. The reward of an act is tied to its benefit; the more widespread the benefit, the greater the reward, by Allah's grace.
