Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the servant of one of you brings him his food, if he does not seat him with him, then let him hand him a morsel or two, or a mouthful or two, for indeed he undertook its preparation." Reported by al-Bukhari.

It is recommended for a person to feed the one who prepares his food—whether a servant or another—something of the food itself, not merely from its leftovers. It is best to seat the one who brings the food with oneself at the table, for in it is humility and good fellowship. This hadith and its like point to the encouragement of treating servants well, showing them fellowship, gladdening their hearts, and sharing food with them—especially the one who prepared and made it ready—because of the craving for it that may arise in their hearts.
