عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْبَدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «حُوسِبَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ، فَلَمْ يُوجَدْ لَهُ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ شَيْءٌ، إلَّا أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ، وَكَانَ مُوسِرًا، وَكَانَ يَأْمُرُ غِلْمَانَهُ أَنْ يَتَجَاوَزُوا عَنِ الْمُعْسِرِ. قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: «نَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ مِنْهُ، تَجَاوَزُوا عَنْهُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Mas'ud al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man from those before you was brought to account, and no good was found with him except that he used to deal with people and, being well-off, he would order his servants to overlook the debts of one in hardship. Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) said: 'We are more entitled to that than he; overlook for him.'" Reported by Muslim.

حوسب: إخبار عمّا سيكون يوم القيامة. يخالط الناس: يعاملهم ويداينهم. غلمانه: عبيده أو عماله. أحق بذلك: أولى بالتجاوز والعفو. تجاوزوا عنه: الخطاب للملائكة.
"Was brought to account": an announcement of what will happen on the Day of Resurrection. "Dealt with people": he transacted with them and lent to them. "His servants (ghilman)": his slaves or his workers. "More entitled to that": more deserving of overlooking and pardon. "Overlook for him": the address is to the angels.

المداينة والإقراض ومساعدة الآخرين والتجاوز عن المعسرين، خصلة حميدة، وصفة كريمة رتّب اللّه عزّ وجلّ عليها أجرًا عظيمًا. أنّ من رحم الناس في الدنيا وتجاوز عنهم وأنظر معسرهم كان ذلك مظنّة أن يتجاوز اللّه عنه يوم القيامة.
Lending, extending credit, helping others, and overlooking the debts of those in hardship is a praiseworthy trait and a noble quality upon which Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) has appointed a great reward. Whoever shows mercy to people in this world, overlooks their faults, and grants respite to those among them in hardship, this is a means by which Allah may overlook his sins on the Day of Resurrection.
