عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: «فَوَاللّهِ، لأَنْ يَهْدِيَ اللّهُ بِكَ رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ حُمْرِ النَّعَمِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Sahl ibn Sad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "By Allah, that Allah should guide a single man through you is better for you than red camels." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

حمر النعم: جمع أحمر. والنعم: الأبل، وهو مثل يضرب لكل نفيس، والأصل أنّ الإبل الحمراء كانت أنفس الأموال عند العرب. خير لك: أي أكثر فضلًا وأعظم أجرًا عند اللّه من اقتناء وامتلاك هذه النعم أو بذلها في سبيل اللّه.
"Red camels" (humr al-na'am): humr is the plural of ahmar (red), and al-na'am means camels. It is a proverb applied to anything precious, the origin being that red camels were the most prized of possessions among the Arabs. "Better for you": that is, greater in merit and reward with Allah than possessing and owning these camels or even expending them in the way of Allah.
