Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Convey from me, even a single verse. And narrate from the Children of Israel, and there is no harm. But whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire." Reported by al-Bukhari.
"Even a single verse": that is, even if what is conveyed is a single verse of Allah's verses. The command to convey the Qur'an—which Allah has undertaken to preserve—is an indication that conveying the hadith, whose preservation was left to people, is all the more warranted. "And there is no harm": no sin and no blame. "But whoever deliberately lies about me": a clear indication of conveying the Sunnah, because lying through it is more likely and more capable of occurring than lying in conveying the verses of the Qur'an. "Let him take his seat in the Fire": let him take for himself an abode in it; this is a statement in the form of a command.

The obligation of conveying what was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) of the Book and the Sunnah, such that the one present informs the one absent, and the knowledgeable instructs the ignorant, even with the least amount, each according to his ability. The obligation of seeking knowledge so that one may be able to convey the Sharia of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic); it is among the communal obligations (fard kifayah) which, if fulfilled by some Muslims, the obligation is lifted from the rest, but if none fulfills it, all are sinful. The permissibility of relating what befell the Children of Israel for the sake of taking heed and admonition, provided that the account is not among what has been established as false, and that one seeks out what is established and in agreement with Islamic law. Lying in the religion of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) and upon the tongue of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is among the greatest of major sins, leading its perpetrator to the Fire. Encouragement to seek truthfulness in speech and caution in narration so that one does not fall into lying, especially in the Sharia of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic); this requires sound and precise knowledge.
