Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And whoever travels a path seeking knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him thereby a path to Paradise." Reported by Muslim.

A statement of the merit of seeking knowledge, that it is a path to entering Paradise, because it makes the Muslim clear-sighted regarding his affair, guides him to acts of righteousness, and places in his heart a light by which he distinguishes truth from falsehood and recognizes sound action from corrupt. The permissibility of traveling in seeking knowledge, and encouragement to take the means and exert effort in acquiring it. Religious (Sharia) knowledge is the head of all sciences, because it is the path to righteousness and success in this world and the Hereafter. Every branch of knowledge—religious or worldly—by which the Face of Allah is sought, through which honor, victory, and elevation for the Ummah are sought, and by which good and benefit for humanity are intended, is a rewarded knowledge for which one is recompensed, by Allah's leave.
