عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا مَاتَ ابْنُ آدَمَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلّا مِنْ ثَلاثٍ: صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who supplicates for him." الشرح · explanation
انقطع عمله: أي الإثابة على عمله، لأنّ العمل يتوقف بالموت فيتوقف الثواب المترتب عليه. صدقة جارية: كالوقف من مسجد ومشفى وغير ذلك. علم ينتفع به: كتعليم غيره أو تأليف كتب في العلم.
"His deeds come to an end": that is, the reward for his deeds, because action ceases with death, so the reward consequent upon it ceases. "An ongoing charity": such as an endowment (waqf) of a mosque, a hospital, and the like. "Knowledge that is benefited from": such as teaching others or authoring books of knowledge.

The merit of seeking and teaching knowledge, and encouragement toward that, so that one may attain the increase of reward and recompense after his death. The merit of ongoing charities whose benefit continues, and encouragement to raise children with a righteous Islamic upbringing, so that the parent may benefit from the good deeds of his child, such as his seeking forgiveness for him and supplicating for him.
