عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ لَيْلَةَ أُسْرِيَ بِهِ بِقَدَحَيْنِ مِنْ خَمْرٍ وَلَبَنٍ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمَا، فَأَخَذَ اللَّبَنَ، فَقَالَ جِبْرِيلُ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «الْحَمْدُ للّهِ الَّذِي هَدَاكَ لِلْفِطْرَةِ، لَوْ أَخَذْتَ الْخَمْرَ غَوَتْ أُمَّتُكَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought, on the night he was taken on the night journey, two vessels—one of wine and one of milk. He looked at them and took the milk. Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: "Praise be to Allah, who guided you to the fitrah (natural disposition). Had you taken the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray." Reported by Muslim.

أسري به: أي إلى بيت المقدس ثم عرج به إلى السماء. بقدحين من خمر ولبن: أحدهما مملوء خمرًا والآخر لبنًا. هداك: أرشدك وألهمك أن تختار علامة الفطرة، والمراد بها هنا الاستقامة والتوحيد وسلامة العاقبة، وجعل اللبن علامة عليها، لكونه سهلًا طاهرًا سائغًا للشاربين يفيد البدن ولا يؤذيه. لو أخذت الخمر غوت أمتك: أي انهمكت في الجهل والضلال، لأنّ الخمر أم الخبائث ومجلبة الشرور.
"Taken on the night journey" (usriya bihi): that is, to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), then he was ascended to the heaven. "Two vessels of wine and milk": one of them filled with wine and the other with milk. "Guided you": directed you and inspired you to choose the sign of the fitrah, by which is meant here uprightness, tawhid (monotheism), and soundness of outcome. Milk was made a sign of it, being pure, wholesome, and palatable to those who drink it, benefiting the body without harming it. "Had you taken the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray": that is, would have plunged into ignorance and misguidance, because wine is the mother of all vices and the source of evils.

حمد اللّه تعالى على ما يكون من نعم عامة على الأمة. أنّ الإسلام دين الفطرة الذي تتقبله النفس السليمة، وتدركه الأفهام القويمة. الحثّ على حمد اللّه تعالى على ما يوفق إليه من خير وفضل. الخمر أم الخبائث، وتعاطي الأمة لها عنوان الجهل وانحراف الفهم، ونذير الدمار والهلاك.
Praising Allah the Exalted for the general blessings that come upon the Ummah. That Islam is the religion of the fitrah (natural disposition), which the sound soul accepts and the upright understandings grasp. Encouragement to praise Allah the Exalted for the good and merit one is granted. Wine is the mother of all vices; the Ummah's indulgence in it is a mark of ignorance and deviation of understanding, and a harbinger of ruin and destruction.
