عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَ أَعْرَابيٌّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فقَالَ: عَلِّمْني كَلامًا أَقُولُهُ، قَالَ: «قُلْ: لا إِلٰهَ إِلّا اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، اللّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا، وَالْحَمْدُ للّهِ كَثِيرًا، سُبْحَانَ اللّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلّا بِاللّهِ العَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ» قَالَ: فَهَؤُلاءِ لِرَبِّي، فَمَا لِي؟ قَالَ: «قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ؛ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَارْزُقْني» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Teach me something to say. He said: "Say: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; Allah is the Greatest, abundantly great; and praise be to Allah in abundance; glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds; there is no might and no power except through Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise." He said: These are for my Lord, but what is there for me? He said: "Say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me." Reported by Muslim.

بيان عظيم فضل هذه الأذكار في رفع الدرجات وتكفير السيئات، والحفظ من غوايات الشيطان، وذلك لاشتمالها على التقديس والتنزيه والثناء بأنواع الجميل. ما تمحوه هذه الأذكار من السيئات إنّما هو الصغائر، وأما الكبائر، فلا بد لها من التوبة. انشغال المسلم بمثل هذه الأذكار المأثورة عن رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم تجعله دائم الصلة باللّه تعالى وتصرفه من وساوس الشيطان وفضول الكلام.
An account of the tremendous merit of these remembrances in raising ranks, expiating sins, and guarding against the seductions of Satan, since they comprise sanctification, glorification, and praise of every beautiful kind. The sins that these remembrances erase are only the minor ones; as for major sins, they require repentance. The Muslim's occupation with such remembrances transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) keeps him in constant connection with Allah the Exalted and turns him away from the whisperings of Satan and idle speech.
