عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ فُقَرَاءَ المُهَاجِرِينَ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فقَالُوا: ذَهَبَ أَهْلُ الدُّثُورِ بِالدَّرَجَاتِ الْعُلا وَالنَّعِيمِ الْمُقِيمِ، يُصَلُّونَ كَمَا نُصَلِّي، وَيَصُومُونَ كَمَا نَصُومُ، وَلَهمُ فَضْلٌ مِنْ أمْوَالٍ: يَحُجُّونَ، وَيَعْتَمِرُونَ، وَيُجَاهِدُونَ، وَيَتَصَدَّقُون، فَقَالَ: «أَلا أُعَلِّمُكُمْ شَيْئًا تُدْرِكُونَ بِهِ مَنْ سَبَقَكُمْ، وتَسْبِقُونَ بِهِ مَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ، وَلا يَكُونُ أَحَدٌ أَفْضَلَ مِنْكُمْ إلّا مَنْ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعْتُم؟» قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، قَالَ: «تُسبِّحُونَ، وَتَحْمَدُونَ، وَتُكَبِّرُونَ، خَلْفَ كُلِّ صَلاةٍ ثَلاثًا وَثَلاثِينَ» قَالَ أَبُو صَالِحٍ الرَّاوِي عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا سُئِلَ عَنْ كَيْفِيَّةِ ذِكْرِهِنَّ، قَالَ: تَقُولُ: سُبْحَانَ اللّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ للّهِ، وَاللّهُ أَكْبَرُ، حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِنْهُنَّ كُلِّهِنَّ ثَلاثًا وَثَلاثِينَ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وَزَادَ مُسْلِمٌ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ: فَرَجَعَ فُقَرَاءُ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَوا: سَمِعَ إِخْوَانُنَا أَهْلُ الْأَمْوَالِ بِمَا فَعَلْنَا، فَفَعَلُوا مِثْلَهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «ذَلِكَ فَضْلُ اللّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ»

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the poor among the Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: The people of wealth have gone off with the highest ranks and lasting bliss. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, yet they have a surplus of wealth with which they perform Hajj and Umrah, wage jihad, and give in charity. He said: "Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up with those who have preceded you and outstrip those who come after you, and none will be more excellent than you except one who does the like of what you do?" They said: Of course, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "You glorify Allah, praise Him, and magnify Him thirty-three times after each prayer." Abu Salih, the narrator from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), when asked about how they are to be said, replied: One says: Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, until all of them together come to thirty-three. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Muslim added in his narration: The poor among the Emigrants returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Our brothers, the people of wealth, have heard what we did, so they did the like of it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills."
