عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّـي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعجْزِ والكَسَلِ، وَالجُبْنِ وَالهَرَمِ وَالْبُخْلِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَحْيَا وَالمَمَاتِ» وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and decrepitude, and from miserliness; I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave; and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death." In another narration: "and from the burden of debt and being overpowered by men." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
العجز: عدم القدرة أو ضعفها على فعل الخير. الجبن: الخوف وضعف القلب، وهو ضد الشجاعة. الهرم: كبر السن. ضلع الدين: ثقل الدين وشدته. غلبة الرجال: المراد به الاستعاذة من أن يكون ظالمًا أو مظلومًا.
"Incapacity": the absence or weakness of the ability to do good. "Cowardice": fear and weakness of heart, the opposite of courage. "Decrepitude": advanced old age. "The burden of debt": the heaviness and severity of debt. "Being overpowered by men": what is meant is seeking refuge from being either an oppressor or one who is oppressed.
