عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «كَانَ مِنْ دُعَاءِ دَاوُودَ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ، وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ، وَالْعَمَلَ الَّذِي يُبَلِّغُنِي حُبَّكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ حُبَّكَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي، ومِنَ الْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the supplications of David (peace and blessings be upon him) was: O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the deeds that will bring me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and cold water." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

ومن الماء البارد: خص الماء البارد بالذكر، لشدة ميل النفس إليه زمن الحر، فهو أحب المستلذات إليها.
"And cold water": cold water was singled out for mention because of the soul's intense inclination toward it in times of heat, it being the most beloved of pleasures to it.

الحضّ على طلب محبّة اللّه والسعي إليها بالعمل الصالح، واتباع رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، قال تعالى: قل إن كنتم تحبون اللّه فاتبعوني يحببكم الله. مجاهدة النفس وتقديم طاعة اللّه وطاعة رسوله على نفسه وأهله وكل ما تهوى نفسه وتشتهيه.
Urging the seeking of Allah's love and striving toward it through righteous deeds and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as Allah the Exalted said: "Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you." Struggling against the soul and giving precedence to obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger over oneself, one's family, and everything the soul desires and craves.
