عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَالَ: «مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ مُسْلِمٌ يَدْعُو اللّهَ تَعَالَى بِدَعْوَةٍ إِلّا آتَاهُ اللّهُ إِيَّاهَا، أَوْ صَرَفَ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهَا، مَا لَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ، أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ القَوْمِ: إِذًا نُكْثِرُ، قَالَ: «اللّهُ أَكْثَرُ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، وَرَوَاهُ الحَاكِمُ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ أَبِي سَعِيِدٍ، وَزَادَ فِيهِ: «أَوْ يَدَّخِرَ لَهُ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ مِثْلَهَا»
Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no Muslim on earth who supplicates to Allah the Exalted with a supplication but that Allah grants it to him, or wards off from him an evil the like of it, so long as he does not supplicate for something sinful or for the severing of ties of kinship." A man among the people said: "Then we shall supplicate abundantly." He said: "Allah is more abundant." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith. And al-Hakim reported it from the narration of Abu Sa'id, adding to it: "or He stores up for him a reward the like of it."

إذًا نكثر: أي إذا كانت الدعوة بغير إثم مستجابة فنحن نكثر من الدعاء. اللّه أكثر: أي أكثر إحسانًا ونوالًا مما تطلبون. صرف: منع.
"Then we shall supplicate abundantly": that is, if a supplication free of sin is answered, then we will supplicate abundantly. "Allah is more abundant": that is, more abundant in kindness and giving than what you ask for. "Wards off": prevents.

أنّ الدعاء لا يضيع، فهو إما أن يستجاب ويحصل المطلوب، أو يمنع اللّه به من السوء بقدره، أو يدّخر له من النفع مثله. أنّ ما عند اللّه من الخير أكثر مما يطلب الناس ويسألون.
That supplication is never wasted: either it is answered and what was sought is attained, or through it Allah wards off an evil of equal measure, or He stores up for the supplicant a benefit the like of it. That the good which is with Allah is greater than what people request and ask for.
