عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْبِرِّ، وَإِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَصْدُقُ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللّهِ صِدِّيقًا، وَإِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْفُجُورِ، وَإِنَّ الْفُجُورَ يَهْدِي إِلَى النَّارِ، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَكْذِبُ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللّهِ كَذَّابًا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man keeps speaking the truth until he is recorded with Allah as truthful (siddiq). And falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man keeps lying until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

البر: اسم جامع لكل خير. الفجور: هو الفسق والانغماس في المعاصي والمجاهرة بها، وهو اسم جامع لكل شر.
"righteousness (al-birr)": a comprehensive term for all good. "wickedness (al-fujur)": it is transgression, immersion in sins, and flaunting them openly; a comprehensive term for all evil.

الحثّ على تحري الصدق والاعتناء به، فإنّه إذا اعتنى به وأكثر منه، عُرف به. التحذير من الكذب والتساهل فيه، والكذب أشد الأشياء ضررًا، والصدق أشدها نفعًا. الصدق يدل على الشجاعة في مواجهة الواقع، والكذب يدل على الجبن والتردد وعدم الثقة في مواجهة الواقع. الاعتياد على أمر وملازمته يصبح سجية في المرء يعرف بها.
An encouragement to seek out truthfulness and be attentive to it, for when one attends to it and does it often, one becomes known for it. A warning against lying and taking it lightly; lying is the most harmful of things, and truthfulness the most beneficial. Truthfulness indicates courage in facing reality, while lying indicates cowardice, hesitation, and lack of confidence in facing reality. Habituating oneself to a matter and persisting in it makes it a trait in a person by which he is known.
