عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّكَ إِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ عَوْرَاتِ الْمُسْلِمينَ أَفْسَدْتَهُمْ، أَوْ كِدْتَ أَنْ تُفْسِدَهُمْ» حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ، رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بِإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ.
Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If you pursue the private faults of the Muslims, you will corrupt them, or nearly corrupt them." A sahih (authentic) hadith, reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.

العَوْراتُ: هي مَواضِعُ الخَلَلِ في النَّاسِ ومواطِنُ القبْحِ.
"private faults" (al-awrat): they are the places of defect in people and the sites of ugliness.
