عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عنهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَكُونَ ثَوْبُهُ حَسَنًا، وَنَعْلُهُ حَسَنَةً؟ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ اللّهَ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ، الْكِبْرُ: بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ، وغَمْطُ النَّاسِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one who has in his heart the weight of an atom of pride will enter Paradise." A man said: A man likes his clothes to be fine and his sandals to be fine? He said: "Indeed Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride is rejecting the truth and despising people." بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ: دَفْعُهُ. وَغَمْطُهُمُ: احْتِقَارُهُمْ.
"rejecting the truth": pushing it away and refusing it. "despising them": holding them in contempt.

Blameworthy pride is one of the major sins, and a little of it bars one from entering Paradise; its criterion is contempt for people and refusal to submit to the truth.
