عَنْ وَاثِلةَ بنِ الأسْقَعِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لا تُظْهِرِ الشَّمَاتَةَ لِأَخِيكَ فَيَرْحَمَهُ اللّهُ وَيَبْتَلِيكَ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ. وَفِي الْبَابِ: حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ السَّابِقُ فِي (بَابُ التَّجَسُّسِ): «كُلُّ الْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ حَرَامٌ»
Wathilah ibn al-Asqa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not show gloating over your brother's misfortune, lest Allah have mercy on him and afflict you." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith. Also in this chapter: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned earlier in (the chapter on Spying): "Everything of a Muslim is inviolable to another Muslim."

The prohibition of rejoicing at the misfortune of one's Muslim brother, and the punishment for the one who does so in this worldly life. The true believer feels pain at what pains his Muslim brother and rejoices at what makes him rejoice.
