Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that he passed by some young men of Quraysh who had set up a bird and were shooting at it, and they had assigned to the owner of the bird every one of their arrows that missed. When they saw Ibn Umar, they dispersed. Ibn Umar said: "Who did this? May Allah curse whoever did this. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed anyone who takes a living creature as a target." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
"They set up a bird": that is, they made it a target and a mark. "Every one that missed": every arrow that did not hit the mark. "Al-gharad (the target)": it is the mark, the thing that is shot at.
The prohibition — as forbidden (haram) — of taking any living creature as a target, because of the torment of the animal it involves without a legitimate (shar'i) reason requiring it. That this is among the major sins (kaba'ir), because of the cursing of the one who does it. Islam's safeguarding of the rights of animals and its prohibition of tormenting or killing them (wantonly).
