عنْ جابرٍ رضي اللّه عنهُ قَال: أُتِى بأَبي قُحافَةَ والِدِ أبي بكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ رضي اللّه عنْهُما يوم فتْحِ مكَّةَ ورأسُهُ ولِحيتُهُ كالثَّغَامَةِ بياضًا، فَقَالَ رسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «غَيِّرُوا هَذا واجْتَنبُوا السَّوادَ» رواه مسلم.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Abu Quhafah, the father of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both), was brought on the day of the conquest of Mecca, his head and beard white like the thaghamah plant. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Change this, but avoid black." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
أبو قحافة: هو عثمان بن عامر جاء به أبو بكر رضي اللّه عنهما يوم فتح مكة فأسلم، ومات في خلافة عمر رضي اللّه عنهم. الثغامة: هو نبت يكون بالجبال غالبًا إذا يبس أبيض كأنّه الثلج فيشبه به الشيب، وقيل: هو شجر أبيض الزهر والثمر. غيروا هذا: أي الشيب.
Abu Quhafah: he is Uthman ibn Amir; Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) brought him on the day of the conquest of Mecca, and he embraced Islam; he died during the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). The thaghamah: a plant found mostly in the mountains; when it dries it turns white as though it were snow, and gray hair is likened to it. It is also said that it is a tree with white flowers and fruit. "Change this": that is, the gray hair.

The dislike of leaving gray hair as it is, and the recommendation of changing its color by dyeing. It is forbidden to use black to dye the hair, because of the deception involved in it; but it is permitted in jihad in order to intimidate the enemy.
