عَنْ أبي هُرَيرَةَ رضي اللّه عنْهُ أنَّ رَسُول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَال: «إنَّ الْيهُود والنَّصارى لا يَصْبِغُونَ، فَخَالِفوهُمْ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so differ from them." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
الخضاب: هو الحناء ونحوه، وخضب وصبغ بمعنى واحد، وقيل: يقال: خضب إذا استعمل الحناء فإذا استعمل غيره قيل صبغ. المُرَادُ: خِضَابُ شَعْرِ اللِّحْيةِ والرَّأسِ الأبْيضِ بِصُفْرةٍ أوْ حُمْرةٍ، وأمَّا السَّوادُ، فَمنْهيُّ عَنْهُ كَما سَنَذْكُرُ في الْباب بعْدَهُ، إن شاء اللَّه تعالى.
"Dyeing" (al-khidab): it is henna and the like; khadaba and sabagha carry the same meaning. It is also said that one says khadaba when henna is used, and sabagha when something else is used. "What is meant": dyeing the white hair of the beard and head with yellow or red; as for black, it is prohibited, as we shall mention in the following chapter, if Allah the Exalted wills.

استحباب صبغ الشيب بالحناء وغيره سواء كان في اللحية أم غيرها. الحثّ على مخالفة اليهود والنصارى في عوائدهم وما كان من شأنهم في مظهر ولباس وغير ذلك. للمسلم شخصية متميزة عن غيره في ملبسه وهندامه وسلوكه، فليحرص كل مسلم على التزام السنة النبوية المطهرة، ولا يليق به محاكاة غير المسلمين في تقاليدهم وعاداتهم.
The recommendation of dyeing gray hair with henna and the like, whether in the beard or elsewhere. The encouragement to differ from the Jews and Christians in their customs and in whatever was of their manner in appearance, dress, and so on. The Muslim has a personality distinct from others in his dress, grooming, and conduct; so let every Muslim be keen to adhere to the pure Prophetic Sunnah, for it does not befit him to imitate non-Muslims in their traditions and customs.
