عَنْ جابِرٍ رضي اللّه عنْهُ أنّ رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم نَهَى أنْ ينْتَعِلَ الرَّجُلُ قَائمًا. رواهُ أبُو داوُدَ بإسْنادٍ حَسنٍ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man to put on his sandal while standing. Reported by Abu Dawud with a hasan (good) chain.

ينتعل: يدخل رجله في النعل.
"Put on the sandal" (yantaʿil): he inserts his foot into the sandal.

كراهة لبس النعل حال القيام، واستحباب القعود حين الانتعال، وذلك إذا كان يحتاج للاستعانة بيده في لبسه، وحتى لا ينحني ويظهر على هيئة قبيحة، وقد يقع على الأرض أيضًا، فإذا لم يحتج للاستعانة بيده فلا كراهة. اهتمام الإسلام بالآداب حتى في كيفية لبس النعل، ليبدو المسلم على أحسن حال.
The dislike of wearing the sandal while standing, and the recommendation of sitting when putting it on; this is when one needs to use his hand to help in putting it on, so that he does not bend over and appear in an unseemly posture, and might also fall to the ground. If he does not need to use his hand, then there is no dislike. Islam's concern for good manners, even in how to wear the sandal, so that the Muslim may appear in the best state.
