عنِ ابن عُمر، رضي اللّه عنهُما، قَالَ: نُهينَا عنِ التَّكلُّفِ. رواه البُخاري.
On the authority of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: We were forbidden from affectation (takalluf). Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
نُهينَا عنِ التَّكلُّفِ: هو أن يتكلَّفَ الإنسانُ ما لا عِلمَ له به، ويُحاول أن يَظهَرَ بمظهرِ العالِمِ وليس كذلك.
"We were forbidden from affectation": that is, that a person burdens himself with what he has no knowledge of and tries to appear in the guise of a scholar when he is not.
