عنْ جابِر رضي اللّه عنْهُ عنْ رسُول اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَال: «غَطُّوا الإنَاء، وأوْكِئُوا السِّقَاءَ، وَأغْلِقُوا الْباب، وَأطفِئُوا السِّراجَ، فإنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لا يحِلُّ سِقَاءً، ولا يفتَحُ بابًا، ولا يكْشِفُ إنَاءً، فإنْ لَمْ يجِدْ أحَدُكُمْ إلا أنْ يَعْرُضَ على إنَائِهِ عودًا، ويذْكُر اسْمَ اللّهِ فَلْيفْعَلْ، فَإنَّ الفُويْسِقَةَ تُضْرِمُ على أهْلِ البيتِ بيْتَهُمْ» رواهُ مسلم.
On the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "Cover the vessels, tie up the waterskins, close the doors, and extinguish the lamps, for Satan does not untie a waterskin, nor open a door, nor uncover a vessel. If one of you finds nothing but to place a stick across his vessel and mention the name of Allah, let him do so, for the little fasiq (the mouse) sets the household's house ablaze upon them." أوكئوا: اربطوا من الوكاء، وهو ما يربط به من خيط أو غيره. السقاء: وعاء من جلد يكون للماء. لا يحل سقاء: لا يحل وكاءه. يعرض: يضعه عليه بالعرض. الفُويْسِقَةَ: الفأْرةُ. تضرم: تشعل وتُحْرِقُ أي تكون سببًا لذلك؛ بأن تجر الفتيلة إلى الأمتعة فتشتعل النار فيها.
"Tie up": bind, from al-wikaʾ, which is whatever is used to fasten, such as a string or the like. The waterskin: a vessel made of leather used for water. "Does not untie a waterskin": does not undo its binding. "Places across": sets it upon the vessel crosswise. The little fasiq: the mouse. "Sets ablaze": kindles and burns, that is, becomes the cause of it, by dragging the wick to the belongings so that the fire catches in them.

الحثّ على تغطية أوعية الماء، وذلك صونًا لها من الحشرات والأوساخ وكل ما يؤذي ويستقذر. إغلاق أبواب البيوت والغرف عند النوم احتياطًا من الفساق واللصوص وكل خطر يتوقع، وليحصل اطمئنان النفس وارتياحها وتهدأ في نومها. الشيطان يعبث بشؤون الناس حين غفلتهم، ويغري هوام الأرض بالإيذاء، ولذا يجب الأخذ بالحيطة والحذر من كل شر متوقع. استحباب التسمية عند وضع الأشياء واستعمالها.
Encouragement to cover water vessels, in order to protect them from insects, dirt, and everything harmful or filthy. Closing the doors of houses and rooms when sleeping, as a precaution against the wicked, thieves, and every anticipated danger, and so that the soul attains reassurance and comfort and rests in its sleep. Satan tampers with people's affairs during their heedlessness and incites the vermin of the earth to cause harm; therefore one must take precaution and guard against every anticipated evil. The desirability of mentioning Allah's name when placing and using things.
